Author's Intro

It's tempting to think that truly good Christian leaders never lose zeal, but that's simply not true. We all find ourselves on the edge at times, frustrated by everyday pressures and failed dreams, or wondering if it's just time to go. Becoming weary in those moments is not a moral failure; it's a natural bump on the long road of ministry. The fact that you are here looking for new perspectives is a sign of courage, and hope and I commend you for seeking a way forward.

As a spiritual director, I meet with those who live out their callings in a variety of ways. Those conversations convince me that there are some challenges all Christian leaders share. I wrote Enduring Ministry for you and for me to demonstrate that we are not alone. To stay the course, we need encouragement and insight from one another.

Grounding in the Moment, Learning through Conversation, Thriving in the Midst of Ambiguity

First, finding our grounding in the moment means staying engaged and centered when circumstances get tense. It's bound to happen and sometimes we end up feeling smaller than we really are. Gifted people, called by God, practice their sense of groundedness by asking good questions, reflecting before responding, and by choosing carefully the stories they tell.

Second, learning together through conversation reminds us that ministry unfolds among people who are equally called by God. That can be a hard thing to see and appreciate at times, making it important that we stay rooted in our shared traditions, mindful of how we share power, and working to increase flexibility.

Third, thriving in the midst of ambiguity is the audacious hope that God's mission is being accomplished even when we cannot yet see the way through. Especially in the seasons that seem most foggy and tense, Christian leaders are called to keep innovating, keep befriending their limits, and keep holding all things gently.

Solitude with God and Vision Keepers

If I were to boil Enduring Ministry down to two essential actions, both would relate directly to vision. Most importantly, take time for solitude with God and anchor yourself in the vision of being unimaginably loved and cherished. There is no better orientation for ministry. Then, stay connected with those who hold you to a wholesome vision for ministry and who support you in your ongoing discernment.

Naturally, I would be honored if you chose to read and reflect on the whole book, but find your way to solitude with God and to relationships that nurture your vision, and you will be well on your way toward a ministry that endures.
